Hello!
Remember last week's post, when I dressed up my sister, did her makeup and hair, and took her modeling shots? Well, I don't want to toot my own horn, but I was actually pulling triple-duty that day. Not only was I a stylist and photographer, but I also got my own chance to pose in front of the camera!
I have a love-hate relationship with this oversized pink blazer. I rarely wear it because it has such an odd shape and is the color of Pepto-Bismol, but something about it's boldness and unwieldiness makes me fond of it.
I thought that this look was a perfect testament to the Maison Martin Margiela x HM collaboration (that is sadly now sold out), because MMM was so fond of dramatic shapes. Of course, MMM's cocoon jackets make my Pepto-Bismol one look puny by comparison.
A jacket that is both bold and odd
a sheer, impractical shirtdress
black utilitarian tights
+ cowboy boots (because I'm from Texas, y'all)
____________________________________________
a look that is perfectly "me"
Kisses,
Brittney
UPDATE:
Maybe this jacket is more Dior and less MMM?
What kinds of outfits and clothes are you known for?

Fashion's Next Supermodel
My parents and grandma shooed me away when I offered to help with Thanksgiving dinner preparations, so I had to find a new way to entertain myself while the turkey was cooking. I ended up playing "dress-up" with my little sister and taking glamour shots with my dad's super awesome Nikon 5100 camera. (Now that I think about it, my blog is basically an excuse for me to play "dress-up" every day).
This "dress-up" episode taught me two things:
1) I need a new camera to take better photos
2) MY SISTER IS BETTER AT MODELING/FASHION BLOGGING THAN ME? HOW?!? *CRIES
Seriously, look at these shots. Someone get this girl an ad campaign. The only directions I gave her was to look "depressed and fashionable", and since she's seen plenty of fashion magazines, she knew exactly what I meant.
To add insult to injury, after I told my sister that she was surprisingly good at posing, she retorted: "Yep, I look better than you did! I should be the one with my own fashion blog!"
T________T *tears
Note to self: work on poses.
Sibling rivalry aside, I thought that my sister had a moody scowl that might look good in a magazine's editorial feature. So... I took the liberty of creating her first Vogue spread :P
Notice the page numbers on the bottom. I have my sister's rise in fashion stardom all planned out HA!

Daily Inspiration- Week of 11/17/12
Black dress / Jumper sweater / Charlotte Olympia cat shoes / Jon Josef kitten heel shoes / ASOS cat eye sunglasses / Clear Hello Kitty Tote | FOREVER21 - 1030187760
For some reason, I have had cats on the brain lately. I think it's either because (a) there's been a strange cat terrorizing my apartment complex late at night, or (b) Forever 21 just came out with their insanely cute Hello Kitty collaboration. For my wallet's sake, I'm hoping it's because of the stray alley cat. Otherwise, I'm in danger of blowing my entire holiday shopping budget on cute Hello Kitty graphic sweaters.
This fascination with cat-related fashion items is especially puzzling because I am actually very allergic to cats. I guess wearing clothes with cats on them is my way of vicariously getting close to a real cat? At least my allergies prevent me from ever turning into a full-fledged cat lady later on in life, right?
Best wishes for the weekend, from your neighborhood "Hello Kitty" cat lady!

Fall Brights
And once autumn finally reaches Houston, it loses interest in the city very quickly; one day, you will wake up and realize that it has left town on the last train, running away with that no-good boy from the liquor store. I knew that I had about a 2-week window to dress up in my fall brights and snap photos before the dreary winter replaces the crisp fall weather.
This sweater is actually a from the men's department at the Gap. I love wearing men's clothing during the fall and winter; somehow, I naturally turn to bigger layers when I bundle up. I also love high-octane color combinations like orange and blue, but I managed to tone it down by accessorizing with a neutral colored necklace and boots.
Thanks for reading!
Do you love bright colors in the fall as much as I do? Comment below!

Sunrise
Staying up all night, as known as "pulling an all-nighter", is sometimes an unfortunate necessity of college life. However, the reward for being diligent and studying while everyone else is asleep is that you can greet the sun as it finally rises.
I chose to witness my sunrise at the James Turrell Skyspace, a new structure that was built on campus just this summer, as part of our President Leebron's public art initiative.
Sometimes I like to jokingly call this building "the alien spaceship" or "President Leebron's sacrificial altar". In reality, it is just a pavilion on top of a square hill, but if you walk by when the sun is rising or setting, it becomes your very own light show.
And what do you wear to see the sun so early in the morning? Only the most comfortable sweatshirt you own, and a pair of really cool gold-printed leggings, of course.
Honestly, I have never been a morning person. For me to be awake at 6AM was a practically a miracle, so I had never been so happy to see the sun finally made its way over the Texas Medical Center.
Surprisingly, even though I had been weary and groggy while climbing up the hill, I felt reenergized as I watched the surroundings light up in the morning sunshine. For a glorious moment, as the glass windows and clouds caught the glow of the sun, I felt euphoric.
Maybe I should wake up earlier more often!
Back to sleep for now,
Brittney

Daily Inspiration- Week of 11/8/12
H&M, 29.95 // Black Brocade Flocked Mesh Bodysuit, $27 // Heart tight, $14 // Matt Bernson punk boots // Brass jewelry
Even though it's November, Houston is still a stifling 80 degrees today. I've been dreaming of cooler weather so I can finally wear a tweed jacket like the one shown above. My Pinterest has been filling up with pictures of sweaters and tights, but it will be a while before I can use those pictures as outfit ideas.
If you would like, you can follow me on Pinterest here and I'll follow back!

This week, I stumbled upon a song by Macklemore that really hit home. "Wings" is a rap critiquing how materialistic how society is. The music video tells the story of a boy who really wants brand-name basketball shoes, and his greed consumes him:
We want what we can’t have, commodity makes us want itI thought that this song was especially relevant because, personally, I have boxes and drawers full of clothes that I don't wear at all, yet I still shop often. This song made me realize that my overflowing collection of things is something to be ashamed of in light of the recent hurricane that hit the Northeast. It's easy to forget that people in New York are still without electricity and clean water. While I am busy collecting and buying pieces for my closet that might never get worn, fellow Americans are shivering in the dark.
So expensive, damn, I just got to flaunt it
Got to show ‘em, so exclusive, this that new shoe
A hundred dollars for a pair of shoes I would never hoop in
I encourage you to donate to the Red Cross by texting 90999 if you want to help out with Hurricane Sandy relief. You might notice that I included a book in my photoset above: the book is To Buy or Not to Buy, a guide on how to stop overshopping. I'm going to look through it and see how I can stop spending money on items that I don't need, and instead use that money for better causes.
Hopefully, this newfound guilt will motivate me to change my shopping mindset and encourage me to invest in what really matters to me. I'm also glad I have this blog so I can post my style experiments and learn how to recycle the clothes that I own to maximize my own closet.
How do you keep from overshopping? Let me know in the comments!
Best,
Brittney

How to Start a Fashion Blog: What Not to Do
So you plan to create your own fashion blog, or make it big as a street style photographer. You've done your research about "how to blog" and how to promote your fashion blog on social media sites. But what nobody told you is what not to do as a rising blogger.
What not to do is the most important advice anyone can possibly give to you, for one reason:
The Internet is unforgiving. Not only does it keep track of every photo you've uploaded, even the ones you think you've deleted, but the self-made critics that populate the interwebs are often ruthless and can't be appeased. They will rip apart your carefully-crafted ensemble like a paper-thin polyester shirt from Forever 21, and make you sorry for ever thinking you had style pizzaz.
How do you avoid enraging these needle-eyed critics? I have a few tips. Here, to rescue you, are the 10 Commandments of Fashion Blogging:
1. Thou shalt not post awkward poses
You want to be a fashion blogger so people can admire your clothes and the way you style them. So why chase your readers away with a super-awkward pose or photo? And I don't mean "awkward" like cute-Zooey Dechanel-awkward, I mean seriously awkward.
Some of these pictures are awkward with a capital A, so awkward that you can barely stand to look at the screen.
Posting pictures like this might earn you visitors, but those visitors might not have the nicest things to say about how photogenic you are.
Yeah, just keep your legs together, kids.
2. However, thou shalt mix up thine poses
Even though you shouldn't go crazy with gravity-defying poses and body contortions, there is something to be said for creativity. Don't stick with the same pose in all of your pictures, or you risk looking like a one-trick pony.
3. Thou shalt learn how to use image processing software effectively
While minor editing is recommended (cropping the photo, maybe adding a filter, or blurring the background), there are some instances where the police should be called in for Photoshop abuse.
What about this picture? Too much liquify? Skin is so...dewy. Discuss.
4. Thou shalt not have a "barf face"
You are blogging because you love it, right? Well, expressions like these make it look like someone held you hostage until you produced an outfit post.
5. Thou shalt not abuse the background props
Posing with objects is a cool way to add interest to your photo, and interacting with them gives you something to do with you arms. But whatever you do...
...don't look like you're about to tip over the poor background prop...
...don't don't attempt to assault your props either:
6. Thou shalt not post trends that thou can worketh not: or "Keep proportions in mind: we can't all rock palazzo pants"
We all wish that we could be thin and tall enough to work every trend. In reality, that's just not going to be the case.
For instance, I know I can't pull off really skinny jeans because I'm just not thin enough. Unfortunately, some of these ladies don't know their limits as well.
If an outfit looks like it's wearing you, swap it for another. Aim to post quality pictures of outfits you actually feel comfortable in and look great wearing.
7. Thou shalt not overload an outfit (or "Thou shalt keep it simple!")
Floral printed scarf. Check. Black and white printed dress. Check. Wide black belt, bright blue tights, ankle-strap heels---check, check, check. Can I just have the check, waiter? Because i just lost my appetite for fashion.
And here we have gold lame, we have a white vest, we have yellow shorts, we have a woven clutch, we have a headband, earrings, chains, a watch, and is that a flower?!?
8. Thou shalt take quality pictures
Nowadays, image processing software can really vamp up your pictures, but it is just half of the equation. It all starts with taking a good-quality photo, a photo you can improve on later.
That means thou shalt not include copious amounts of flash in your original photo:
Thou shalt also not choose a dim, sketchy backdrop for photos:
And thou shalt not half-ass any photo:
9. Thou shalt be yourself
Now, this commandment might seem counterintuitive to the ones I presented before it, but let's be honest: you are not going to please everyone. There are bloggers out there who will hate on seemingly innocent outfits.
There are people who will criticize any aspect of your photo that they can latch onto:
So don't be afraid to be yourself. After all, we read blogs because they provide us with new, interesting, and unique viewpoints. Don't lose sight of why you started blogging in the first place.
10. Most of all, thou shalt be nice to other fashion bloggers
After looking through hundreds of forum posts where bloggers criticize others for everything under the sun, I'm amazed at the hate that I've found.
Some of these comments are unwarranted and don't do anything to help us become better bloggers or more of a community. The next time you want to attack a blogger personally, remember that she might pose awkwardly or not have the best style, but there is no need to trash her reputation online.
Of course, there's nothing wrong with recognizing a really awful picture and gleaning a lesson from it. Especially if the blogger is wearing palazzo pants.
I hope these tips will help you start your blog!
Best,
Brittney
P.S. All photos belong to their respective blogs. I provided the sources when I could identify the bloggers. The reason the rest are unknown is because I culled images from this thread. All comments and opinions are from the forum posters, I merely collected them for this post.
You can start off by not doing this.

"I seem to have a permanent case of the hip thrust/ half-squat."
I guess she really likes that pose.

Grass halo. Enough said.
And now a concrete halo. Try to spot the image processing.

This outfit was posted to a thread on "Worst fashion blog photos", but I really like it. Maybe i'm just partial to red, black, and white outfits.
